Understanding and telling the story of people’s lives beyond the data

Lankelly Chase

250,000 people in England have contact with at least two out of three of the homelessness, substance misuse and criminal justice systems. At least 58,000 people have contact with all three. Hard Edges, a report written by Lankelly Chase highlighted the rigorous data around this but Lankelly Chase were keen to understand the individual stories that sat behind this data.

Over the course of a year, we met with 12 people based in the North of England who all had experience of homelessness, substance mis-use and the criminal justice system. We spent time with them to understand their life journey up to now - capturing their experiences, their challenges and dreams in films, illustrations and an online website. Their stories were shared at an event attended by change-makers, commissioners and professionals.
